Back Pain. X Rays Unnecessary

Posted by Jody under: Back Pain .

Back pain is one of the most common illnesses in the developed world, afflicting about 7% of the adult population each year. Standard medical examination frequently involves taking x rays. However, a new study out of the United Kingdom suggests that this procedure may not be necessary.

In this trial, 421 individuals with low back pain for an average of 10 weeks were divided into two groups: one group received x rays, and the other did not.1

The results over 9 months of follow-up indicated that the practice of obtaining x rays added nothing to treatment other than a subjective sense among patients that they had been well cared for. The researchers concluded that in the absence of specific signs of serious spinal disease, routine x rays for back pain are not warranted.
