Carl Jung, world famous psychologist, used mandalas for movements towards psychological growth, “vessels” into which one can project one’s psyche. He recognized that archetypes from many cultures were present in this spontaneous expression of the unconscious. Circles are universally associated with prayer, meditation and healing.

Mandalas abound in the natural forms of nature; snow crystals, seedpods, flowers, etc. Cut any fruit in half and you will find a mandala. If you look closely, you can see a Mandala everywhere in nature.

Beyond its beauty and mystery, the Mandela is a scared art of symbols. Symbols are containers of various levels of knowledge. The symbol is created through a condensation of energies that can define the interrelationship of nature and human consciousness. Consciousness is the power of an organism to integrate, order and transform itself. An organism is an integrated, self-contained, ongoing set of relationships, from cell to a solar system to the vastness of the Universe.

Humanity has used symbolic systems to help in the understanding, developing and maintaining a way of Life. Elide said “thanks to symbols, the individual experience is ‘awakened’ and transmuted into a spiritual act.”

The mandala can lead to greater awareness and transformation to the response a human has to the impulses of the world. The Mandala is the matrix of the symbolic systems. There are many different styles and kinds of Mandalas used throughout the world in our present time.

Make a Mandala

One of the best ways to learn and understand Mandalas is to make one. You do not have to be an Artist to do this, you just have to be honest with your deeper feelings and do your best to express them. You will need a large sheet of paper (12”x 14” or larger), your choice of markers, (pencils, crayons, watercolors, etc.), whatever you like or are comfortable using. Find a quiet place to draw where you will not be disturbed for at least an hour. Prepare your mind to begin the drawing exercise. In this article, I will discuss two methods of mandala drawing.
