The Voyeur. Mark Cuban. Part 2

Posted by Jody under: Business .

Those college years were instrumental in developing Cuban’s business sense. Cuban chose Indiana, he says, because it was the least expensive of the country’s top 10 business schools. As a freshman, he attended graduate-level business classes, getting an A in a statistics class. In his sophomore year, the dean of the MBA program discovered the undergrad was taking graduate-level classes, so he banned Cuban from the program, though he let him keep the credits. “I partied my brains out the last two years,” Cuban says.

And he had seen enough to decide he didn’t need an MBA. “No offense to those with MBAs, but I’m an entrepreneur at heart, and I think that MBAs are more for people who want to work for large companies, not for people who want to start their own.”

Cuban says he’s trying to keep a level head despite his dizzying paper wealth. “It doesn’t make my jump shot any better, and it doesn’t make it any easier to lose weight,” he jokes. “Someone told me recently that being rich just means that you have more dollars than you can spend, and that’s how I try to look at it.” Cuban has given away some of his extra dollars – he has donated three times to his alma mater, though he won’t disclose the amounts. And this basketball season, he bought 100 tickets to each of the 25 home games of the Dallas Mavericks for underprivileged local kids.

A single guy who describes himself as married to his job, Cuban insists that despite all the money, he doesn’t want to rest on his laurels. “I hate to go back to the basketball analogy, but work is a lot like it. You have to always improve your game, have court sense, pay attention, and realize that people are always trying to take the ball away from you.”
